Ian
describes his approach as “photography from the
front line”. The front line here is far from the
edge of the studio lights, up into the heights of the Himalayas,
or the depths of cold of the Patagonian winter. One of Britain’s
leading alpinists and nominated four times for the Piolet D’Or,
Ian has made significant ascents in the Himalayas, Alaska, Kyrygyzstan,
Greenland and Patagonia. Fellow alpinist Andy Kirkpatrick describes
Ian’s approach “There’s been times when
I’ve seen Ian trim his gear to the minimum, chucking out
his sleeping bag just to squeeze in more camera equipment. The
fact that he’s willing to suffer for his art means he brings
back photos that few others can”.
Ian
has worked with many of the world leaders in the outdoor industry
including Adidas, Black Diamond, Crux, Lightwave, Mountain Equipment,
Mountain Hardwear, The North Face, Osprey, Patagonia, Rab Equipment
and Wild Country. His images have been published in the Mail on
Sunday, Independent on Sunday, Living Well Magazine, Men's Health
and Men's Fitness with lead articles for Alpinist (USA), Rock
and Ice (USA), Gripped (Canada), Rock and Snow (Japan), Campo
Base (Spain), Montagnes (France), and On the Edge, High and Climber
(All UK). Ian’s work has also been published in books written
by Reinhold Messner, Alex Huber, Sean Isaac and Neil Gresham as
well as being cameraman on the film Cold Haul which is available
on DVD.
